20.06.2026 Day 11 - Pont Farci - St Hilaire-fu Harcouët. Passed 1000km amd bugee jumping (not me)

Again some very steep hills the first two hours. Then still ascent, but more gradual. That's a big difference. Bungee jumping from an old railway viaduct! And passed 1000km today 💪.

Where I stayed tonight

Tough start. When you look at the altitude profile, the second part looks worse, but that's not the case. The ascents in the first part are 8-10%, there is no room to "take it easy", I need everything I have just to keep moving. The second part goes more up, but at 2-3% ascent, you can adjust speed so you don't get too tired.

Impression from the road

After about two hours I came to the Viaduc Souleuvre. This is an old railway bridge designed bu Gustave Eifel (you know). The railway is decommissioned, but pillars are still there. And youy can do bungee jumping from one of them. I didn't, but my dear friend Helga might - she is very courageous!

Hard to get good pictures of this, but this guys is hanging upside down and being picked up again.

There are videos of this of course.

The pilars of the bridge

In fact, it turns out that much of the excellent bike paths I follow are old railway tracks. A pity it was decommissioned, but very good use of the old tracks!

Now staying at a communal camping in Saint-Hillaire-du-Harcouët (try to remember such names). Communal campings are supposed to be "lower standard". But I'm impressed, and I would say they're better suited for small tents.

About cycling in France. Firstly, many tour cyclists, and most on "real bikes", not e-bikes (a big difference with the Netherlands, where everybody 12+ seems to have an e-bike and it is even flat!). Then VERY good bike lanes and signs. I found out I've cycled in 12 countries or so, but France is really number one. And on the cycle tracks, for EVERY road you cross, there is a physical barrier that forces you to slow down. May seem annoying, but very important for safety. I really appreciate it. Vive La France.

Slow down

And while writing this in the city, this orchester appeared. I think they are preparing for tonight's football match. Great atmosphere here.

The second part may look more intimadating, but it is opposite

I can't get rid of those numbers, but you can roughly follow the course.

93 km that took me 7:30 hours (6 hours cycling). Total distance 1041 km.
