11.06.2026 Day 2 - Vlissingen-Oostende.A little cheating and a very rainy finish

Jan was driving to Vlissingen, in fact my goal for today. Decided to come along and rather move further into France in the end. Great trip through Zeeuws Vlaanderen with lots of memories. More boring in Belgium. And getting pretty wet the last two hours.

The lighthouse in Breskens, completely made of steel. Now a tourist attraction

We arrived in Vlissingen around 10:15, and I could take the bicycly/pedestrian ferry to Breskens at 10:48. This was established after a tunnel was opened for cars. Such ferries are often missing in Norway - admitted, there is much less demand.

I now follow a Eurovelo track again, like last year. Starting with Eurovelo 12 until Calais, followed by others afterwards. I'll keep you up to date. The signing is pretty good, but it helps to have a map as well.

The cycling along the Dutch Zeeuws Vlaanderen coast was really nice, in spite of the persistent Southwest wind. Memories from the holidays of my youth at the end of the 1960s.

Waterdunen, an innovative project that combines nature, recreation and coastal defence, Also nature is man-made in the Neterlands.

This certainly wasn't there in the 1960s. Pictoresque small villages instead. This definetely makes more money. Which makes the world go round, they say.

After a road side lunch I suddenly found myself in Belgium, not much marking there. Integration of individual countries in Europe, seemless borders. In Belgium, the track runs more inland, which is a bit boring, but with less wind.

Around two o'clock it started REALLY raining, nothing like the showers of yesterday. This tought me two things about my equipment: my rain jacket is not watertight anymore. This was in fact expected - I have one more 🙂. But my Goretex shoes weren't either, that was a dissapointment. It might have helped if I had sprayed them 🤔.

Following Google to the hotel (no tent in this weather 🌧) i came to a waterfront, in fact the channel between Brugge and Oostende. I thought Google had fooled me again, but there was another ferry.

Oostende from the ferry

From here, I quickly reached the hotel. With a nasty surprise, they did not allow the bike inside. Even threatened to call the police if I did not move it - they certainly would have prioritized that. Nothing about that on Booking. I parked the bike in a guarded place on the railway station. Hope it it sill there tomorrow 🤞. First time ever I met such inflexibility.

In spite of the rain and the hotel, it felt like a good day. No impact of yesterday's streneous efforts.

And here is today's track.

Today's trip was 64 km and took me 5 hours (4:30 active cycling). Total distance 167km.
