29.06.2026 Day 19 - Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie - La-Trance-sur-Mer. Lovely day tailwind and more beach.

Lovely cycling day in sunny weather. Changing between undulating (vertical and horizontal) bike paths in pine forests and stretches along the coast with the white crests of the waves and the blue of the ocean and the sky.

Agiculture changing to other products

Part of the way goes through a dune landscape, reminding of the Netherlands, but with more water

After 2 hours I reached Les-Sables-d'Olonne. Met some other cyclists. A surprisingly big town...

... with tremendous beaches.

A big difference with last year is the number of tour cyclists I meet, many tens each day. Last year I stopped for a chat when I met another cyclist, maybe once or twice per day. That doesn't work now!

I did talk to these three guys from Paris on their way to Bordeaux when I met them as I stopped for lunch

I mentioned to a Frenchman that I found the cycling here very good. Of course he said, we are the nation of cyclists. Now the Dutch may disagree, and maybe they are right when it comes to daily use. But with tour cycling I think the French are ahead, both in numbers, "real" cycling (not e-bikes) and conditions.

I'm now in La-Trance-sur-Mer on a nice camping a few meters from the beach. Of course I had another swim in the sea but it was quite windy so did't stay long. Last self-prepared meal at the tent I suppose.

82 km today in 6 hours, 4:40 active cysling time. Total distance 1642 km. Another 80 or so km tomorrow and then it's over for this year.
